Indy Music Unite!

A Case Study

"we realized that we barely know about the local music scene, even though we are well aware of the other aspects of the culture and arts scenes in the city. "

Indianapolis isn’t popularly known outside the Midwest as a leading city in music; at best, it is known as a conference hotspot because it’s at the “Crossroads of America.” Despite this, Indy has a defined culture and art scene that is well known by residents.

Our five-person design team had the freedom to choose any context for our semester-long project that spanned 13 weeks. While generating ideas, we realized that we barely knew about the local music scene, even though we were well aware of the other aspects of the culture and arts scenes in the city. Most of our group even realized that we personally know someone involved in the local music scene and we still knew nothing about it (except that a couple of record labels have their offices here.)

This was perplexing and made us wonder what Indy’s local music scene is actually like, because a scene certainly exists. This curiosity fueled our study of local music production and marketing in Indianapolis.
